Spread Some Holiday Cheer at Tinsel

The holiday season is all around us here in Philly: The trees are lit, Santa has taken up his throne at Macy’s and holiday tunes are floating out of every restaurant, store and bar near your 1500 Locust apartment. If you’re not yet sick of the season, don your favorite ugly sweater and stroll to the other side of Broad Street for the return of one of Philly’s favorite new holiday traditions: Tinsel.

The pop-up bar, a half-mile from your 1500 Locust apartment, is bigger and better than ever in its third year. If you’ve never been, Tinsel is a paradise for Christmas lovers—with every corner bedecked in holiday cheer. Most local watering holes have strung up the garland and put out the holly, but Tinsel takes Christmas decorating to a whole new level: a larger-than-life ornament, chandeliers made of wrapped holiday gifts, another made of 500 Christmas ornaments, Santa’s throne, a wall of 1,000 holiday bows, all your favorite holiday songs and, of course, Christmas lights galore. Make sure the phone is charged for photos, because Tinsel is an Instagrammer’s dream.

The festivities also extend to the menu: There are seasonal brews and ciders, wine and more than a dozen creative Christmas-themed cocktails, with names like Deck the Halls, Though the Candy Cane Forest and Tinsel’s Snow Globe. The last drink is served in a snow globe you can take home and adorned with edible snow, while other cocktails are garnished with custom-made ornaments.

New this year, the bar was expanded to accommodate the throngs who flock here, with higher ceilings and additional rooms. Tinsel has happy hour every weekday and hosts frequent events, such as fundraisers for local charities and holiday-themed trivia. If you want to really get yourself into the spirit of the season, take a walk over to Tinsel—and prepare to be amazed!
