Refuel Your Brain Here at Home at this Local Museum

It’s been a long, hot summer—one likely filled with lounging in the park, lazing at the beach or cuddled up on the couch in your 1500 Locust apartment chilling out with a good book. Even if you’re years past the classroom, it can be easy to let your brain go on a bit of a summer vacation when the warm weather creeps in. However, the fall is quickly settling back in Philly, which makes it the perfect time to reenergize your mind and gear up for the months ahead. That’s easy to do here in Philadelphia, which is home to some of the region’s biggest and best museums, research libraries and educational institutions, which provide countless opportunities to sharpen your focus and learn something new (all while having some fun!)

One of the best outlets for engaging education near your 1500 Locust apartment is the National Liberty Museum. Located in Old City, the venue tells the stories of the people and events that have helped make liberty a reality in the United States. It features several floors of permanent, as well as rotating, exhibits where visitors can experience hands-on history and civic lessons, designed to shed light on the importance of the founding principle of American freedom.

Its Liberty Gallery features highlights of courageous icons from around the world and over the last several centuries, and also includes an exact replica of the Liberty Bell, located just blocks from the real thing. The Heroes of 9/11 Memorial spans all three floors and includes rare photos of the attacks as well as tributes to hundreds of victims. The Inspiration Exhibit showcases men and women with physical, cognitive or psychological challenges and tells the stories of how they overcame these obstacles.

While the exhibits alone offer plenty to learn, the National Liberty Museum also hosts a full roster of public events, including storytelling sessions for kids and lectures by historians and civil-rights activists. And all of this educational excitement is just one mile from your 1500 Locust apartment!
