Let’s Go to the Movies!

It’s the dog days of summer—meaning you’re likely hibernating in your 1500 Locust apartment, soaking up air conditioning and Netflix. While escaping the heat is on the minds of many, there’s one fun way to do just that while still getting out and about in the city.

Philadelphia is known as a haven of arts and culture, and movie theaters are no exception. There are a number of film venues right near your 1500 Locust apartment to which you can easily stroll without breaking much of a sweat and take in quality cinema, special events and more.

One of the best-kept secrets in our area is the Philadelphia Film Center. Rebranded last year from its former name of the Prince Theater, the center is an old-school performance venue that—among its many claims to fame—is home to Philadelphia’s largest movie screen. The 7.1 surround sound screen enables both digital and 35 mm presentation, allowing the movie house to screen films from all generations and genres. As a repurposed century-old venue, the Mainstage offers comfy, theater-style seating, adding a unique element to the moviegoing experience. The center also houses a BlackBox screen, offering intimate cabaret-style seating. Your experience can be rounded out with a trip to the refreshment stand, featuring everything from wine to candy and, of course, popcorn.

While Philadelphia Film Center shows everything from blockbuster hits to small, indie films, it’s also a hub of special events. The venue is owned by the Philadelphia Film Society, which uses it for galas, fundraisers, socials and more. If you’re looking to get more involved in Philly’s flourishing film scene, a trip to the Philadelphia Film Center is in order.

And since it’s just two blocks from your 1500 Locust apartment, you can slip out the front door and get right into the theater without having to weather too much of our August temps!
