Where to Go Axe Throwing in Philly

Throwing axes for fun may not sound like the typical recreational activity—but it’s a phenomenon that has caught fire across the country, including right near your 1500 Locust apartment. Most axe-throwing spots require zero experience, are BYOB and involve exciting head-to-head competition—the perfect recipe for a new twist on date night, a unique birthday or bachelor/bachelorette outing or a fun alternative to bar hopping. So if you’re looking for a new option for weekend adventure, put axe throwing on your calendar!

One of the standout spots is Bury the Hatchet, located less than a mile from your 1500 Locust apartment. Bury the Hatchet is set up in a warehouse-type setting—lined with more than a dozen axe-throwing lanes, each designed to accommodate about 12 people. An axe expert mans each lane, teaching the participants the ins and outs of axe throwing, including techniques to get the axe as close as you can to the bullseye target. Warm up with a few practice rounds and then get throwing! Each participant will get a number of chances to throw, with points for each axe that gets stuck to the board—and a boatload of extra points if you hit the target! Then, the competition goes into brackets based on the first round of scores—and throwing continues until there’s only one man or woman standing.

With so many people cheering on their friends in one big hall, the noise level in Bury the Hatchet is high—making for a fun and festive atmosphere! Even better, the venue allows participants to bring their own alcohol (just no liquor, please!) and food, offering picnic tables for axe throwers to sip, socialize and snack when they’re in between turns. At the end of the game, all players are invited to pose for a group shot with the victor—a great keepsake from your axe-throwing adventure!

With the popularity of the game, lanes often sell out, so make sure to make reservations ahead of time. Good luck!
