Philadelphia is the birthplace of American freedom—which is
why it makes perfect sense that Independence Day is one of the hottest, most
exciting holidays in the Philly events calendar. From fireworks to concerts and
everything in between, the City of Brotherly Love is the place to be on 4th of July—and even for several days beforehand! The Wawa Welcome America is one
of the nation’s biggest July 4th event series, with more than 50 programs
taking place leading up to the big day—most of them free and many taking place
right near your 1500 Locust apartment!
While the big concert (this year featuring Jennifer Hudson
and Meghan Trainor) and fireworks show on the 4th is no doubt the
highlight of Wawa Welcome America, there are lots of other opportunities to
show your patriotic pride. The day before the holiday, head to Independence
Hall, about one mile from your 1500 Locust apartment, to get your celebrating
started early at the Historic District Block Party.
The free, seven-hour festival is located in the heart of the
city’s most historic area—and right where the Founding Fathers signed the
documents nearly 250 years ago that awarded America its freedom. Thousands will
gather to celebrate that independence with a day full of food, fun and
festivities. There will be dozens of vendors offering one-of-a-kind artisan
products, samples from some of the city’s most famed restauranteurs and two
stages featuring live music and entertainment. Take in historic demonstrations
that will transport visitors back to the 1700s, mix and mingle with historic
reenactors and learn about the many buildings in the neighborhood where history
comes to life.
Those with little ones will love the Kids Zone, featuring
sports and science activities, along with plenty of historic programming—while
adults will appreciate the beer garden, offering tastes from some of your
favorite local breweries and cideries.
So break out your red, white and blue, and head out into the
city to celebrate American independence where it all started!
