Traditions are common during the holiday season, and Philadelphia is no exception!
Right near your 1500 Locust apartment are a number of world-renowned holiday activities and events, many of which have been delighting locals and visitors for decades. The sights and sounds of Philly this time of year are bound to put anyone in the holiday spirit, even if you’re stressed about your holiday-shopping budget, or have been feeling a bit Scrooge-like. The city’s holiday traditions will put you back in touch with your inner child, and have you marveling at the magic of the season in no time.
Macy’s Christmas Light Show: One of the city’s most iconic holiday events, the Christmas Light Show at Macy’s, five blocks from your 1500 Locust apartment, is a must-see. The tradition dates back to 1955, when it started as part of retailer Wanamaker’s holiday celebration. Since the day after Thanksgiving, every half-hour nearly 100,000 LED lights tell classic holiday tales of Santa Claus, Rudolph and other popular figures, culminating in a brilliant, multi-colored Christmas tree display. The show has been beloved for generations by kids and adults alike.
Dickens Christmas Village: Macy’s Dickens Christmas Village also returned on Black Friday, bringing the writer’s classic “The Christmas Carol” to life. Visitors follow along to the story of Scrooge and the Cratchets as they walk through a miniature recreation of the story, complete with houses, moving figures and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future.
Christmas Village: The newly reopened JFK Plaza has been transformed into an authentic Christmas market. Christmas Village celebrates its 10th season in 2017 and organizers have promised a festival that’s bigger and better than ever. More than 80 booths will ring the park, selling authentic German food and drinks, crafts, clothing and more, a tradition popular in the European country. Even if you don’t plan to buy anything, the village is worth just a walk-through! Grab photos with the light displays, sip on a warm beverage and expect your mouth to water as the smells of waffles, gingerbread and other treats waft through the air.
