Celebrate Freedom in Philly

One of the nation’s biggest Independence Day celebrations takes place in Philly, and you have a front-row seat for all the action.

As the birthplace of the country, Philly fittingly does July Fourth right, with days of concerts, parades, parties and, of course, fireworks. It’s all part of Wawa Welcome America, a city-run festival featuring more than 50 free events celebrating American freedom with lots of food and fun!

Here are just a few of the Welcome America activities happening near your 1500 Locust apartment:

Museum Day — The Philadelphia Museum of Arts celebrates freedom in a big way with a pay-what-you-wish admission rate all day July 2. Whether you want to cough up $10 or just a penny, the museum, located 1.5 miles from your 1500 Locust apartment, will happy open the doors to you to explore the many floors of priceless artwork and artifacts.

Night Market — Organizers of the popular traveling market partnered with Welcome America for a special Independence Day-themed celebration from 6-10 p.m. July 1 at 40th and Walnut streets, two miles from your 1500 Locust apartment. Dozens of local food trucks, breweries and wineries will offer samples of their goods at the block party-style culinary celebration.

“Rocky” screening — Catch the Philly favorite from 8-11 p.m. July 2 on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the site of one of the movie’s most iconic scenes.

Independence Day Parade — Head to Old City, about a mile from your 1500 Locust apartment, for a dose of patriotism. The annual parade, starting at 11 a.m. July 4 at Independence Mall and winding through the city’s historic section, features floats, flags and lots of festive energy.

Party on the Parkway — The fun kicks off at noon July 4 with activities for all ages along Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Kids can take part in crafts and a children’s concert, while adults lounge in two beer gardens and play with four-legged guests at a pet area. Live music will be provided throughout the day on the Parkway, just four blocks from your 1500 Locust apartment, with the festivities kicking into high gear when the sun goes down and Mary J. Blige takes the stage. Stay for the fireworks spectacular at 9:30 p.m. behind the Philadelphia Museum of Art for a colorful conclusion to the day.
